Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma starred with the bat in the IPL 2026 match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, April 20. The left-handed batter smashed an unbeaten 101 runs off 45 balls at a strike rate of 224.44 with the help of seven sixes and eight boundaries. His efforts helped MI post 199/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The bowling unit then bundled out GT for 100 in 15.5 overs, winning the game by 99 runs to end their four-match losing streak this season.

Here are five records by Tilak Varma during his maiden IPL century:
#1 Fastest hundred for MI
With a 45-ball century against GT, Tilak Varma now has the joint-fastest century for MI in IPL. He equaled the previous record held by Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya, who also slammed a 45-ball ton against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural edition of the T20 league in 2008. Cameron Green came close to the record in 2023 but managed a 47-ball century against the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Fastest 100 for MI:
- 45 balls – Sanath Jayasuriya vs CSK in 2008 & Tilak Varma vs GT in 2026
- 47 balls – Cameron Green vs SRH in 2023
- 49 balls – Suryakumar Yadav vs GT in 2023
# 2 Youngest centurion for MI
Tilak Varma is now the youngest centurion for MI in the Indian T20 league. The Hyderabad-born batter achieved the landmark at 23 years and 163 days. Overall, Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi holds the record for the youngest IPL ton, scoring his century against GT at 14 years and 32 days.
Youngest centurions for MI:

- Cameron Green – 23 years and 253 days
- Rohit Sharma – 25 years and 12 days
#3 Outscoring opposition
With his unbeaten 101-run knock, Tilak Varma outscored the opposition as GT were bundled out for 100 in 15.5 overs. It was the first instance when an MI batter outscored the opponent in the tournament. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Brendon McCullum had achieved the landmark in the opening match of the tournament in 2008, scoring an unbeaten 158 before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) got bundled out for 82.
Before Tilak Varma, only three Indian players had outscored their opponents. They are Rahul Dravid (vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2009), Virat Kohli (vs now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2016), and KL Rahul (vs RCB in 2020). Overall, nine players have now outscored an opponent in the IPL. The list also features Chris Gayle (twice), AB de Villiers, and Jonny Bairstow.
#4 Only the fourth batter to score an IPL century at No. 5 or lower
Tilak Varma has become the second Indian batter to score a century while batting at No. 5 or lower after Yusuf Pathan. Overseas players David Miller and Ben Stokes have also achieved the landmark.
100s by lower-order batters:
- Yusuf Pathan (RR) – 100 off 37 balls vs MI in 2010
- David Miller (Punjab Kings) – 101* off 38 balls vs RCB in 2013
- Ben Stokes (now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants) – 103* off 63 balls vs GL in 2017
#5 Death over carnage

Varma scored 19 runs off the first 22 balls he faced before scoring 82 off the last 23 deliveries he faced. His presence helped MI score 96 runs off the last six overs.
